This is a wonderful 1950s overcoat made of quality wool in a navy blue colour. The blue is in a tone specific to a 1950s overcoat, brighter navy blue and a little tiny bit towards purplish. The tailor’s label dates the coat to November the 4th, 1953 (see photo) - the 3 is a little difficult to make out. The wool is of a heavy weight, substantial, and probably very warm - being a Canadian made 1950s overcoat, where winters are brutal, they would have needed especially warm clothing back then. It is made in a classic 1950s overcoat style with padded shoulders, fairly wide high set notched lapels, a three button closure, large flapped side patch pockets, single button turned sleeve cuffs and 19 1/2” kick vent. The coat is half lined in navy blue satin rayon.
Label: Penfield Clothes Tailored by Rex
Tailor’s label: Rex Tailoring Co. Ltd. Toronto Mr. J. Sheldon C40 Date 4-11-53 No 6591 Jack Sheldon. I’m wondering if this is Jack Sheldon the bebop jazz trumpeter, who would do gigs in Toronto.
Union label: ACWA used between 1949 and 1962
Sizing: There is no size label on this 1950s overcoat, and although this should fit a size 40/42 depending on your preference for using a suit jacket underneath, please rely on the following measurements for fit, taken from the exterior (please take the thickness of the fabric and the cut of the garment into consideration):
Shoulders: 22” across shoulder/sleeve seam to shoulder/sleeve seam
Sleeves: 26 1/2” from shoulder/sleeve seam
Sleeve Inseam: 17” long
Chest: 48” around, taken under the arms
Waist: 49”
Hips: 52”
Overall length: 48“, measured flat
Condition: Although pre-owned, this 1950s overcoat is in very good condition with the exception of a little bit of surface nibbling at the right cuff and right pocket as well as a pinhead hole at the left back (just needs a small back patch) - all damage is not noticeable unless under close inspection. Otherwise, there is no pronounced wear, tear, soiling or odour - this 1950s overcoat looks like it saw very little use and was well stored. It is very clean and ready for use.
This is a great 1950s overcoat - fabulous style and very nice quality, you don’t see coats with this heavy gauge wool anymore as it would be cost prohibitive!
