This is a vintage huipil, a traditional blouse worn by Mayan women, often for ceremonial purposes. The Mayans have been hand weaving these garments for thousands of years on back strap looms. Each huipil is unique to its maker, but the basic design expresses both the particular cultural identity in addition to the personal aesthetic of the woman weaving it. This huipil was made in San Pedro, Sacatepequez, Guatemala. I have shown both sides in the photos as well as close-ups of the weaved design and one of the interior. These huipils are made as “one size fits all”. It measures 39” across the top and 26” in height, measured flat. It is in very good condition - unfinished hem over part of the bottom and a bit of yellow toning to the right back of the white linen. I have not tried to whiten this, but I’m sure that it could be done with the right cleaning agent - very minor in any case. This huipil was acquired during the 1980s, but I believe that it was made during the 1960s.
This is a wonderful piece - wearable art, but would be a beautiful piece of weaving to simply display on the wall!
