This is a very nice quality vintage 1970s red velvet coat designed by Marielle Fleury for Rainmaster - Fleury is considered to have been one of the most influential Quebec designers and her designs are becoming quite sought after. The material is made of a very soft velvet, feels like cotton velvet, but probably a rayon velvet given its backing, and is fully lined in red acetate. This red velvet coat is made with a high set military style lapel and collar with an eight button double breasted closure. It has a slash pocket at either side topped with a decorative flap. The collar, cuffs and pockets are trimmed in black rick rack ribbon. The back waist has a faux belt that is decorated with two buttons. The hemline has been let down on this red velvet coat so there is a delineation in the fabric, visible in the photo of the back - this can be re-hemmed at your discretion.
Label: Rainmaster by Marielle Fleury Made in Canada. Rainmaster was a trademark of Sport Togs, which hired Fleury in 1969 to design a line under her own name.
Sizing: There is no size label on this red velvet coat, but this should fit a medium size. Please note the following measurements for fit, perhaps measuring a similar coat that you own for comparison:
Shoulders: 16” across
Sleeves: 23” long
Sleeve inseam: 16”
Bust: 38” around, allow extra room for fit
Waist: 33” around
Hips: 39” around
Length: 39 1/2”, measured flat
Condition: Aside from the aforementioned dropped hem, this red velvet coat is in very good condition with no pronounced marking, wear, tear or stains - this appears to have seen little use and was well cared for and stored over the years.
This is a wonderful red velvet coat - great acquisition for the Canadian fashion collector or just a very stylish red velvet coat !
