This is an antique Aller Vale Torquay pottery jug decorated in the Sandringham pattern. The jug has an interesting tall handle and trefoil shaped opening. The decoration is slip applied and sits raised on the surface, glossy and enamel-like. Aller Vale was founded in 1881 and closed its doors in 1932. Its founder, John Phillips, was influenced by the philosophy of William Morris, a movement towards handmade objects as opposed to the industrialization that was underway during the 19th century. The jug measures 9 1/2 in height to the top of its handle. It is in very good condition with no cracks or noted wear except for deep glaze crazing at the base of the handle (see 2nd to last photo) and a fleabite chip to the top rim edge (see last close-up photo), really minor damage. There is overall surface glaze crazing, but this is not apparent under normal viewing.
This is a lovely display jug - nice acquisition for an Aller Vale or Torquay collection.
