Antique Wood Trinket Box with Victorian Scene of Dogs & People
$75.00

This is a wonderful antique wood box dating to the Victorian era. I acquired this box 40 years ago from a 91 year old lady who was a member of a very important Montreal family - her home was packed with Victorian era treasures. The box is made in a shallow form and has a hinged lid that has a glass top. An old chromolitho print is inserted into the lid through the backside - chromolithography was used prior to photolithography and involved printing each colour separately rather than decomposing colours into a series of varying sized dots in the four primary colours. The scene is very charming - Victorian ladies and a man in a boat with their puppy greeting two ladies at the shore with their puppy. The box has a pegged construction and has gold painted grooves around the periphery. The underside is made of cardboard that is covered with felt - note that the interior bottom is black cardboard.
Size: 5 1/8 by 6 5/8 measured at the underside with a height of 1 3/4. Being shallow, Im sure that this had a specific use, but I dont know what exactly
Condition: In very good condition with minor wear to the gold paint and some dust or soiling to the print - I havent taken the print out to investigate whether this can be cleaned somewhat.
This is a very nice display piece for a Victorian decor, or just a lovely display piece for the dog lover - the Victorians loved their dogs!
