This is a wonderful brutalist cuff bracelet signed by Montreal jeweller Guy (Gilles) Vidal. It is made of pewter with electroplated silver and is cast as 6 rectangular sections. Each section features an abstract floral “daisy shadow” design. It is signed by the interior with a stylized GV, which dates the pieces to the 1960s. I don’t think that this bracelet was ever used and still has what appears to be its original price label of $25. There is no wear whatsoever. The piece measures 7 1/2” in length laid out straight with a width of 1 1/2” and a depth of 3/8”, very thick and heavy - this is a massive piece that weighs 7.5 oz., almost half a pound!
Large examples of Vidal’s work are difficult to come by, especially in this condition - he and Robert Larin are two Canadian jewelry designers who worked in similar metal and had similar designs during the 1960s and 70s. I find this piece to be an excellent example of modernist jewelry design by a well respected brutalist jewelry designer.
