This is a wonderful early example of an enamel brooch made by Quebec jewelry artisans Micheline de Passille and Yves Sylvestre. The back of the brooch is hand signed “de PS”, which is the earliest signature used by de Passille and Sylvestre, who started producing enamel jewelry in 1960.
The piece features an abstract modernist representation of a mountain and sun, at least that is my interpretation. What makes this example especially interesting is the technique utilized - textured raised enamel against a glossy enamel background. The colours are also attractive - the sun in orange with a yellow centre, the mountain in brown and the background in ochre. The brooch measures 2” wide by 1 1/8” high. It is in very good condition with no wear, chipping or other defect.
Quebec produced some very good jewelry artisans during the 60s and 70s, with de Passille and Sylvestre considered amongst the best.....this is a wonderful enamelled brooch and, being an early piece, a great acquisition for the collector!
