This is a modernist sterling silver brooch / pendant made in the form of a round “disc” with a large amethyst stone in its centre, made by Los Ballesteros. The Ballesteros family has a long tradition of silver making going back to pre-Conquest times, with the art passed down from father to son. Jalil Ballesteros established the Taxco workshop in 1937, highly expanding the operation during the 1950s. The piece has both a pin and a hook at the back so the that it can be worn either on a chain as a pendant or as a brooch. The back is stamped “Taillers De Los Ballesteros Taxco Gro, Hecho En Mexico 925" with the stylized B, along with the number 42 within the Eagle assay mark. It measures 1 5/8” in diameter with a thickness of about 3/16” and weighs 0.8 oz. It is in very good condition with no pronounced wear.
This is a lovely, simple modern design that pre-dates 1979 (when the Eagle system was dropped for a letter and number system). Very pretty with the large amethyst in the centre!
