This is a poster sized hand drawn illumination given in appreciation of William L Best who was the Vice President and National Legislative Representative of the Brotherhood of the Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen. I think that he was the Canadian national rep as I have another illumination given to him in 1910 when he was a member of the Chapleau Ontario Snow Drift Lodge. This illumination was given to him on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his membership, which, as the document states, was recognized by King George VI. Mr. Best has C.B.E. after his name, which I believe stands for Commander of the British Empire. The document is signed at the bottom by his fellow members. This illumination is entirely hand done and signed by the artist Gordon Fairbairn. It is on a good quality thick cotton linen content artist paper. It measures 14 1/2 in width by 21 and is in excellent condition - this has been very well preserved. The firemen on locomotives had a demanding and dangerous job. The Brotherhood was originally founded as a secret society that adopted rituals modelled somewhat on Freemasonry, but eventually became a trade union, much needed as injury and death rates were the highest across all industries, even higher than miners.
