This is a a piece of wonderful Marimekko graphic printed cotton fabric, designed by Katsuji Wakisaka in 1975. The pattern is called “Green Green”, but is printed in various colours on a red background.
Marimekko was founded in 1951 Viljo and Armi Ratia. Armi had artist friends submit designs for silkscreening and then had simple dresses made up to show how the designs could be used - this was an early recognition of the role that industrial design could have in marketing products. Jackie Kennedy bought eight Marimekko dresses for use during the 1960 Presidential campaign and the company found commercial success with their bold colors and simple graphic designs. Katsuji Wakisaka was trained at the Kyoto School of Art & Design and started to work for Marimekko in 1968 when he was 24 years old, staying there until 1976.
