This is a very nice quality English bowler hat retailed by venerable haberdasher Moss Bros of Covent Garden. Moss Bros. dates back to 1851 and was recommended in 1924 by King George V’s private secretary as the provider of the correct “levee” dress to wear at court. The hat is made in a classic bowler/derby form with turned rim lined in grosgrain. The crown has a black grosgrain ribbon around it base. It is lined in red satin that is gold stamped with “Moss Bros. of Covent Garden The Complete Men’s Store”. The opening measures about 23” in diameter around the sweatband and 6 5/8” by 8 1/8”, so should accommodate a size 7 3/8. It is in very good condition with no wear, tear or soiling - this has been very well cared for over the years. The hat is difficult to date precisely, but I would think that it dates to the 1940s or earlier.
This is a wonderful English bowler from a quality London haberdasher - excellent hat!
