This is a rare porcelain art deco Blackamoor figurine made by Augarten Wien. The Augarten factory is housed in the old Royal Vienna factory and is considered the successor company to Royal Vienna. They are known for their exceptional quality - they were established in 1923 and still produce fine quality porcelain today. Augarten Wien figurines tend to be quite pricey, but this is understandable due to the attention to detail, the complexity of form and the artistic designs that were generally produced by Augarten Wien. Augarten was at its height during the art deco period, employing known artists such as Walter Bosse, Vally Wieselthier, Ida Schwetz-Lehmann, Mathilde Szendro-Jaksch and artists of the Wiener Werkstatte such as Dina Juhn and Hertha Bucher. This figurine was probably designed by Albin Döbrich, one of the key designers at Augarten Wien from 1924 until 1934.. The figurine is marked on its underside with the “Bildeschild” or “beehive” mark, originally used by the Imperial and Royal Porcelain Manufactory, aka the Royal Vienna factory, with the word “Wien” underneath - this mark was used from 1923 onwards. The piece measures 3 3/8” to the top of the bow of the hat. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or wear - amazing given the intricacy of the figurine.
This is a beautiful quality Augarten Wien figurine - a small, but exquisite piece, expertly modelled and skillfully made.
