This is a wonderful vintage brooch made in a chatelaine style with a large faux baroque pearl surrounded by smaller pearls affixed to a pendant hanging by two chains from a bow form pin also set with faux pearls. The pearls are all hand affixed with wire to a filigree gold toned metal base. The brooch measures 2 3/8” in height with a width of 1 5/8” across the bow pin. The back is marked with a raised “Miriam Haskell” within an oval. It is in very good condition with the exception of some “peel” spots to the finish on the large baroque pearl, one on the front and three small ones on the right side (see last close-up photo). I believe that the brooch dates to the early 1950s, even though it has a 1940s look to it - Haskell began to use the oval plaque post-1950 from what I’ve been able to discern. As an aside, Miriam Haskell was an astute business woman, but did not design her jewelry. Her business partner, Frank Hess, was the creative design genius behind the operation. Haskell,, however, catered to an elite clientele in New York, Hollywood and Europe. Joan Crawford, Lucille Ball, Gloria Vanderbilt and the Duchess of Windsor were all avid admirers and collectors of her jewelry.
Despite the wear to the pearl, this is a wonderful Haskell brooch - attaching pearls with wire was a painstaking task that took many hours to perform, but the resulting quality is evident in the result. Very nice form and very attractive brooch....
