This is a beautiful handmade lace curtain made in the Filet Lacis or Filet Lace technique. This handmade lace curtain is in a cream white colour, almost beige. You can see that the piece is hand knotted as there is a knot in each corner of the lace, which is also known as Fisherman’s Net as the lace is made in the same way that fishermen constructed their nets. The curtain has six defined vertical panels, each bordered by a double stripe of lacework. There is a floral design at the lower section of each panel bordered at the bottom with a curved festoon shape that follows the contour of the bottom edge. The bottom has hand knotted tassels along the entire edge. This handmade lace curtain is in wonderful condition with only two single thread breaks to the filet in the body (that I could find) and a detachment of the tassels at one of the bottom corners, about six detached threads - this can be fixed with just a little bit of patient work. Otherwise, this handmade lace curtain has no other breaks, stains or other defect - it was well stored over the years and looks to have seen little or no use. This handmade lace curtain measures 62” across, and has a length of 76”, excluding the tassels, which measure 8” in length - total length including the tassels is 84”. This is a beautiful piece of old handmade lace - you often find machine made facsimiles or modern versions, but authentic old hand knotted pieces are much harder to find, especially in this condition. This handmade lace curtain probably dates to the 1910s or 1920s. Beautiful accent for a period house!
