This is a wonderful mid century modern porcelain skier figurine designed by Jiří Černoch for Royal Dux of Czechoslovakia. Jiří Černoch (b.1924) started design work for Royal Dux in 1951, only becoming a full time employee in 1968. He specialized in animals, but also designed female figures and athletes. This skier figurine was produced in a small number during the mid-1960s. It is very sculptural and conveys a wonderful sense of motion, with the skier descending a steep slope while turning to his left with a determined expression on his face. It measures 11 1/4 in length, following the angled slope, 8 in height to the top of his head, and 5 in width at its widest. including his outstretched arm. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks or wear but is missing the ski poles. These were originally made of wood, so all that is needed is a wood dowel and two plastic discs to re-create them. The figure is marked on the underside with the Royal Dux raised pink D triangle and the stamped mark “Hand Painted Made in Czechoslovakia in blue. It retains both Royal Dux and Belfor Fine China foil labels on the front base - I assume that Belfor was a distributor for Royal Dux. It is marked with the raised model number 761 and impressed with the number 43. This is a wonderful opportunity to own a piece of ceramic art - great acquisition for the skier and a wonderful decorative accent for a ski lodge!
