This is an antique pectoral crucifix that dates to 19th century France. The back of the crucifix reads Souvenir La Mission. French Catholic missions were important during the colonial period and into the 19th century as organizations that spread the faith to the uninitiated. The type of crucifix offered here was an opportunity for a mission to raise funds and also to provide crucifixes to the public. These are often bronze, but I believe that this one is brass. It measures 4 3/8 in height and features symbols related to Jesus - the holy spirit represented by a descending dove at the top, I assume Mary and Joseph at either side and what I believe is the sacrificial lamb at the bottom. It has a loop at the top which enables the cross to be hung around the neck or from a belt. It is in very good condition with the exception of what look like two small solder marks at the bottom (see close-up photo). In addition, there is a bit of either verdigris or old brass polish - looks worse in the photos, but all you need to do is re-clean, probably with white vinegar (see close-up photo). This is a wonderful antique example - nice size, French manufacture and interesting origin!
