This is an antique Native American handled basket made of ash splint with curly splints emanating from the sides. Ash splint baskets were made almost exclusively in what is now known as New England by the Algonquin and Wabanaki tribal groups. The southeastern tribes, located in what is now known as Connecticut, included the Nipmuck, Mohegan, Pequot, Niantic, Narraganset, and Long Island Montauk, while the Northeastern tribes included the Penobscot, Maliseet, Pennacook, Abenaki, and members of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) nation. This handled basket measures 9 square by 3 1/2 in height exclusive of its handles. Unfortunately, this basket sustained damage at one of the bottom corners (see photos) - it appears that the damage may have been caused by fire as one can see blackish ends around the opening. The loops around the top frame, used to secure the basket to the frame, are missing in one area. The original owner used thread to replace the missing loops, but this is unraveling. Despite these problems, this is a very old basket and deserves to be admired as such - many hours of work went into making this wonderful example of Native American Indian handwork!
