This is a wonderful display plate for the bird lover! It was made in Belgium circa 1880-1900 and features a song bird in its centre, surrounded by oak leaves. It is made in the Barbotine technique, which involves creating a raised image by applying liquid clay “slip onto a background surface. The plate is made of earthenware that is tin-glazed, therefore also considered to be majolica. It measures 7 3/4 in diameter, weighs 9.75 oz, and has a bowl-like form. Unfortunately, it had been mounted on the wall using a spring-loaded wire hanger, which I believe caused the hairlines shown in the last two close-up photos - I removed and discarded the hanger. Despite the hairlines, this is a pretty plate that, aside from a couple of tiny glaze wear spots and crazing to the back, displays very well. It is signed on the underside with the letter E, which I assume was applied by the decorating artist. There is an impressed mark on the front side that might be the makers mark. This is a really lovely display piece - pretty colours, wonderful subject, sold AS IS at a reasonable price.
