This is an antique silver medal that belonged to a Past Regent of the Order Sparta Masonic lodge. The top has a shield with a sword on it and an inscription in black enamel that reads “With It or Upon It” - this is purportedly what Spartan women would say to their men when sending them off to war. On either side of the shield, in black enamel, are the letters “OS”, which stand for “Order Sparta”. Suspended from the top is a crown imposed on crossed pikes and the letters “PR”, which stand for “Past Regent”. The back of the crown is stamped “Caldwell Silver”. The only silversmith named Caldwell that I can find is J.E. Caldwell of Philadelphia, but I cannot find this specific marking. The piece measures 3” in height and 2” in width across the top. It is in very good condition except for a tiny bit of black enamel missing from the “O” of the “OS”. It would date to the very early 20th century, circa 1910. I have not polished the piece and will leave this to the discretion of the buyer. Nice addition to a Masonic collection!
