Antique Victorian Jet Bead Bib Necklace Fringed Accessory
$250.00
Brand Poppy's Vintage Clothing
This is a striking authentic antique Victorian jet bead bib that would have been worn as a decorative accessory at the centre bodice over a blouse. This antique Victorian jet bead bib is made in a triangular shape with beaded fringe Most likely, this would have been worn as a mourning piece. In Victorian times, it was obligatory to wear black while in mourning, a practice made popular by Queen Victoria, who mourned the passing of her husband Prince Albert for an extended period of time. Between the high mortality rate, the large families, and the length of the mourning period, black would have often been worn. The jet on this antique Victorian jet bead bib possibly was of Whitby origin.
Color: Black
Sizing: This antique Victorian jet bead bib measures 5 3/4” across the top and 11 1/2” in height exclusive of its fringe, 16 1/4” including its fringe
Condition: The centre part of this antique Victorian jet bead bib is in very good condition - some of the base thread is showing in the extreme close-up photos, but this is not at all noticeable under normal viewing. I’ve provided photos of the back of the bib in the last two close-up photos. There is missing fringe, however. One side has more fringe than the other, and they appear to be in pairs while the other side has single fringes. There are a couple of fringe threads that are bare, with no beads. This is not noticeable when the fringe falls naturally. Overall though, the triangle core of piece is well constructed and appears to be strong.
You could always attach a piece that could go around your neck to make this antique Victorian jet bead bib into a necklace - great accessory and beautiful object!
