Antique Wood Jewelry Box Inlaid Marquetry Inlay

This is an antique wood jewelry box featuring marquetry inlay detailing. I think that it may have originally been a music box but the musical movement has been removed - this left a cavity below the interior cushion and a crack in the bottom of the box (see last close-up photos). You can see where the winder hole is on the bottom and there is a crack on either bottom side, but you could always use the interior cavity as a secret compartment. The interior is lined in quilted pink silk and there is a mirror on the interior of the hinged lid. The lid is decorated with marquetry in the Florentine manner while the front and back have a checkerboard inlaid pattern as well as a pattern featuring green motifs. The sides are wedge shaped and made of burled wood. The box sits on four feet and measures 8 7/8 by 4 3/4 with a height of 3, including the feet. Aside from the missing movement and the cracking to the bottom, it is in very good condition and displays very well. The key is missing for the lock. I think that the box is early 20th century, most likely European, possibly of Italian origin.
Despite the problems, this is a lovely old box, great to display and store jewelry or keepsakes!
