This is a fabulous mens vintage dressing gown with a woven pattern consisting of a man in a top hat gesturing with his finger and a smoking calabash pipe, the type favoured by Sherlock Holmes, as well as another billiard style pipe. The pattern is in a silver grey against a red satin background. It has a fairly wide shawl collar and has a patch pocket at the left chest and at either side. It cinches at the waist with a fringed sash belt in matching fabric. The sleeves have turned cuffs. The gown is made in a full length and is unlined.
Age: 1930s, maybe early 1940s
Label: Fashion Plate
Material: Probably rayon satin - nice quality with good fall
Sizing: No size is indicated, and although this should fit a medium to large size, please rely on the following measurements for fit:
Shoulders: 18 1/2” across seam-to-seam
Sleeves: 26” long
Sleeve Inseam: 17” long
Chest: 45”, taken under the arms and depending on overlap
Waist: 44” around, but meant to be cinched
Overall length: 49 1/2“, measured flat
Condition: It is in very good condition except for a some yellowish toned moisture staining to the interior at the lower back (see last four close-up photos), more visible on the interior than the exterior. On the exterior, the grey pattern demonstrates some yellowing in places, but the red appears to be unaffected. A good dry cleaner might be able to rectify this, but they would have to be familiar with older fabrics. Otherwise, this dressing gown presents itself very well.
This is a fabulous example of a vintage men’s dressing gown, wonderful Sherlock Holmes-like smoking pattern - striking colour!
