This is a wonderful 50s prom dress / ball gown- the lady from whom I acquired it told me that it was her mother's and that it dated to 1954. The dress was manufactured by the “Perfect Junior Formal Ltd.” company of Toronto and sold at Holt Renfrew and Company Limited, a Canadian boutique type department store that sells only designer and luxury fashion and wares. This 50s prom dress is made with a netted bodice and a skirt made of layers of light blue netted tulle over a lavender blue coloured taffeta base. It is made in a strapless style with faux seed pearls and aurora sequins on lace at the top edge of the bodice. There are two similar diagonal rows of lace across the skirt of the dress. The dress was photographed with a crinoline - the use of a crinoline creates a fuller look although it’s not absolutely necessary. It closes with a metal zipper at its side. The bust has stays over the breast area providing form and shape. Note that the lavender blue under fabric has sheen, so is more reflective under lighting, giving this 50s prom dress a two toned effect.
Label: Holt Renfrew and Company Limited
Hanger straps: Perfect Junior Formal Ltd
Sizing: No size is indicated on the 50s prom dress, and although this should fit a small size, please note the following measurements for fit:
Bust: 32” / Waist: 26” / Hips: 42” (meant to be full and fall loosely/flare out) / Length: 52”, measured flat
Condition: This 50s prom dress is in very good condition with no pronounced wear, tear, stains or odours - it looks like it saw little use and was well stored over the years.
This is a lovely 50s prom dress - having been sold at Holt Renfrew, this would have been a high quality gown!
