This is a luxurious pre-owned cashmere coat dating to the 1950s and sold at Holt Renfrew, which is a luxury brand boutique type Canadian department store, known for offering top designer and private label fashion. It is made in a deep brown colour. The coat has an ACWA union label affixed to the interior pocket that was used between 1949 and 1962. The coat is made in an easy to wear classic style with higher set medium width notched lapels, three button closure, padded shoulders, flapped plush lined side pockets and a 18” kick pleat. The coat is half lined in brown satin rayon.
Label: Cashmere Holt Renfrew & Company Limited
Tailor’s label: Shiffer Hillman Clothes - Toronto unfilled. Shiffer Hillman was a Canadian manufacturer founded in 1925. It closed its doors in 1981.
Sizing: There is no size label, and although I estimate that this should fit a US size 44 depending on preference for wearing a jacket, please rely on the following measurements for fit, taken from the exterior (please take the thickness of the fabric and the cut of the garment into consideration):
Shoulders: 20” across shoulder/sleeve seam to shoulder/sleeve seam
Sleeves: 25” from shoulder/sleeve seam
Sleeve Inseam: 16” long
Chest: 47” around, taken under the arms
Waist: 46”
Hips: 49”
Overall length: 46", measured flat
Condition: Although pre-owned, this coat is in very good condition - it’s obvious that it saw very little use. It is very clean but I have found a few tiny nibbles to the nappe (finish), a couple on the back and one under the right lapel, really minor and not noticeable - this shouldn’t bother anyone.
This is a great coat - cashmere coats from the 1950s are difficult to find, and this one, having been sold at Holt Renfrew, is of very nice quality. Attractive colour and style!
