This is a vintage purple wool 1950s dressing gown or robe that was sold at the Chalons department store in Cairo, Egypt. This 1950s dressing gown has shawl lapels, turned cuffs, a patch pocket at either side and a patch pocket at the left chest, all trimmed with pink satin. The upper back of this 1950s dressing gown is lined in pink satin. It closes with a matching sash belt.
Label: Chalons Tel. 770026 with Arabic text on the backside. Chalons is located at 36 Kasr El Nil street, Cairo. Chalons was a high-end department owned by Egyptian Jews that catered to a well heeled clientele at a time when Cairo was a cosmopolitan city. Chalons was one of a number of Egyptian European style megastores, along with Cicurel, Shemla, Benzion, Sednaoui, Simon Arzt, Gattegno and Pontremoli. I believe that most of these stores no longer exist or were changed radically after the Egyptian Revolution of 1952.
Sizing: Size 38 is indicated on this 1950s dressing gown, and although it should fit a ladies large to extra large size or a men’s medium to large, please rely on the following measurements for fit:
Shoulders: 18” across, seam-to-seam
Sleeves: 24 1/2” long from the shoulder seam
Sleeve inseam: 19”
Chest: 46” around, depending on overlap
Waist: 46”, meant to be cinched with the belt
Overall length: 47”, measured flat at the back from the neck seam
Condition: This 1950s dressing gown is in very good condition with no noticeable defect - I can see two separations in the wool when examining the robe with a strong light behind it, but this is not at all visible under normal viewing and very minor in any case, probably original to the weaving of the cloth. Otherwise, there is no pronounced wear, tear, stains or odour. This 1950s dressing gown looks like it has been well cared for and stored over years
This is a nice quality 1950s dressing gown - given the pink trim, I would think that it is more for a woman, but any gender could wear this….
