Vintage 1950s Evening Coat with Cape Style Shawl Collar Black Wool Ladies Size L

This is a fabulous evening coat dating to the 1950s, featuring exceptionally sophisticated style.   The coat has a cape-like shawl collar that covers the upper sleeves and upper body of the coat.  The collar is constructed with wedge shaped pleating that is visible on the underside of the collar (see second to last close-up photo).  The collar can be worn up or down as desired.  The sleeves are inset and in a 3/4 length that tapers to the cuff.  The body of the coat is cut with a wide flare so that it falls in drapes and has movement.  The coat is made of an excellent quality black wool in a linen finish and the interior is lined in a silk fabric.  There are no closures, so the coat simply wraps around the body - there is a very minor mend on the edge of the opening under the collar (see last close-up photo), which make wonder if there had been a hook there originally but I really don’t know.

Sizing:  There is no size label, and although this should fit a medium to large size, please rely on the following measurements for fit, taking the thickness of the fabric and style of the garment into account:

Shoulders: 19” across from shoulder/sleeve seam to shoulder/sleeve seam

Sleeves: 20” long from shoulder/sleeve seam

Sleeve Inseam: 13”

Bust: 60” around, depending on overlap at front

Hemline: 95” around, laid out straight

Overall Length: 41”, measured flat

Condition:  Except for the aforementioned small mend, this coat is in excellent condition with no wear, tear, stains or odours - it looks to have seen very little use and was well stored over the years.

This is a super sophisticated evening coat - I believe that this was made by a good couturier, but in the absence of a label, it’s impossible to attribute it.  Beautiful coat - wonderful piece for going to any formal event, the opera, ballet or a nice restaurant!
