This is a vintage hand knit Cowichan sweater featuring reindeer, based on the Mary Maxim pattern number 400. Number 400 is a man’s pattern, but this is a ladies’ sweater - I’m not sure of the pattern number for the ladies’ version. The sweater is made of wool. It is made in a tan brown base colour with green and brown detailing. The sweater does up with a metal “Lightning” zipper down the front and has a shawl collar. These types of sweaters are generically called Cowichans after a British Columbia native tribe called the Salish who live in the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island on whose designs they are based. They are also referred to as curling sweaters in Canada.
Sizing: No size is indicated, and although this should fit a medium size, please rely on the following measurements for fit, comparing to a Cowichan or other sweater that you already own, if possible:
Shoulders: 18” across, seam to seam
Sleeves: 23 1/2” long from the shoulder seam with the cuffs unturned
Sleeve Inseam: 16” long
Chest: 36” around, taken under the arms
Bottom: 34” around, unstretched
Overall length: 22”, measured flat
Condition: This is in very good condition with no pronounced wear, tear, pulling, piling, staining or odour.
This is a well made sweater with very good quality heavy weight wool - wonderful reindeer pattern!
