This is a vintage artisan made leather briefcase dating to 1979. The exterior of the briefcase is hand tooled with a quite intricate design - very attractive! The back of the piece is signed “JAPY 1979” at the lower right corner. I can’t be sure, but I think that this was made in Quebec - there was a movement in Quebec during the 70s towards artisan made products using organic materials and the owner’s name that appears on the interior flap was a Quebec resident of Mont Laurier. The piece measures 15” in width and 11’ in height with a depth of about 3” at the bottom. The front flap secures with brass metal closures that turn to lock and there is a brass chain and peg at either side. The handle is leather coil wrapped, but it is half-undone - a leather specialist should be able to re-secure this somehow. Aside from this, there are ink marks on the interior flap (see last close-up photo), but the interior is clean. This is all hand made and held together with lacing and glue. Wonderful hand made piece - very intricate and attractive tooling!
