This is a wonderful anthropomorphic condiment or relish jar made in Japan. This is a rather unusual example - I cant find a similar one anywhere, and I do believe that it is an earlier anthropomorphic piece, probably 1930s era because of the pattern and the appearance of the Japan stamp on the underside. The piece features a half crying face and the lid has an onion skin appearance at the front only. The jar is attached to the under plate and there is a notch in the lid that allows the insertion of a spoon. The ceramic is thicker and of a better quality than seen on post-war Japanese wares. It is in very good condition - there is a small chip on the inside edge of the lid (see close-up photo), and the lid also has a linear discolouration due to a glaze inclusion (see close-up photo), all very minor damage. The piece measures 5 in height to the top of the lids finial and 5 in diameter across the under plate - it weighs 13.2 oz. This is not a common piece - nice addition to an anthropomorphic collection!
