This is a small top handle pottery basket made most likely by the Mayfield / Barton Pottery of Torquay. It is decorated with a seagull standing on a rock in a style associated with Barton. Barton was founded in 1922 and closed its doors around 1935. This basket measures about 4 in height to the top of its twisted handle and has a width of 3 7/8 and depth of 2 5/8. It is in very good condition with no cracks or noted wear, just a couple of tiny chips to the underside side towards the side and back (see last close-up photo) - easily camouflaged with a bit of black paint. It is unmarked but appears to maybe have had a label.
This is a lovely display miniature basket - a havent been able to find any other examples of a Torquay twisted handled basket, so a nice acquisition for a Torquay collection.
