This is a lovely hand knotted or macrame ribbon shawl with long fringe. The piece is made in a triangular form and features a quite intricate knotted pattern - a large amount of work went into making this lovely shawl. I believe that these are of Spanish origin but were also made more recently in South America.
Age: Difficult to date exactly - they’ve made these for many years, but given the complexity of the pattern, I think that this is an older example, although it could date anywhere between the 1920s and 1950s.
Color: Ivory/beige
Material: I believe that it is rayon. I did a burn test on a small snippet and it appeared to indicate rayon from the way it burned. Rayon is made from purified cellulose, primarily wood pulp. It is chemically converted, so although originally natural, due to the chemical manipulation, it is considered a semi-synthetic. When first invented during the mid 19th century it was called “artificial silk” and actually demonstrates many of the same qualities, but with more weight, which gives the fabric a wonderful drape and “fall”.
Sizing: The top edge measures 64” across, exclusive of any fringe. The sides measure 40” in length exclusive of fringe and the mid-point has a height of 37”. The fringe measures 24” in length.
Condition: It is in very good condition with no staining or pronounced wear and tear.
