This is a vintage navy blue wool overcoat made in England for Holt Renfrew of Canada, which is a luxury brand boutique type Canadian department store, known for offering top designer and private label fashion. This coat dates to the late 60s due to its style - it features mod styling with epaulette decorated shoulders, higher set medium width military-type lapels that can be buttoned at the neck (see photo), a wide collar that can be worn up or down, no waist seam or front darts, a five button closure (should you do up the neck), no buttons at the cuffs, a matching waist belt, a slant pocket built into either side and a single 21” kick vent at the back. It is fully lined in a navy blue toned satin fabric. The buttons are leather covered. The exterior is made of 100% wool.
Retailer’s label: The Men’s Shops Holt Renfrew Made in England. Made in England. All Wool. The use of the apostrophe and lack of French on the label, as well as the absence of a CA textile number, dates the coat to pre-1973. I would think that this coat dates to around 1969 or maybe 1970.
Sizing: Size 42R (regular) is indicated, but I think that that would be a snug fit, maybe more of a 40 - please note the following measurements for fit, taking the cut of the coat and thickness of the fabric into account:
Shoulders: 19” from shoulder seam to shoulder seam
Sleeves: 25 1/2” from the shoulder seam
Sleeve Inseam: 17 1/2”
Chest: 44” around, taken under the arms - note that sizing is usually 4” less than chest measurement, making this more like a US size 40
Waist: 42” around
Hips: 44” around
Length: 42”
Condition: This coat is in very good condition with no pronounced wear, tear or staining - it looks to have seen little use and was well cared for over the last 50 or so years.
This is English made outerwear, produced at a time when British fashion was all the rage - well constructed, great looking coat!
