This is a wonderful men’s overcoat dated 1950 on the tailor’s label. The coat is made in a classic 40s transitional style with higher set peaked lapels and a six button double breasted front. It has a flapped pocket at either side. The exterior is made of a heavy weight charcoal grey wool and the interior is fully lined in black satin fabric. The coat has a 17 1/2” single back vent/kick pleat. The sleeves have turned cuffs with two buttons.
Label: Joly Montreal
Sizing: There is no size tag but this should fit a large size, probably about a US size 46, perhaps more like a 44 if you’re wearing a jacket underneath - my observation is that normally sizes are 4” less than chest circumference, but the wool is so thick on this coat, that that rule of thumb may not hold in this case. Please note the following measurements for fit, taking the cut and thickness of the fabric into account as well as the length of the sleeves and the overall length of the coat:
Shoulders: 20” from shoulder seam to shoulder seam
Sleeves: 26 1/2” from the shoulder seam
Sleeve Inseam: 16 1/2”
Chest: 52” around, taken under the arms
Waist: 52” around
Hips: 54” around
Length: 44”, measured flat
Condition: It is in very good condition with no pronounced wear, tear, stains or odours - the nappe is intact and the lining is clean. This coat looks to have seen little use and has been very well cared for and stored over the last 67 years.
This is a very nice quality coat in exceptional condition, considering its age - great piece if you need to recreate mens fashion as it was in 1950!
