Art Deco Shawl Woven Silk Gauze Fringed Rose Floral Lace Ptn

$175.00

Brand Poppy's Vintage Clothing

This is a gorgeous art deco shawl featuring a rose floral design.  This art deco shawl was woven on a loom, most likely a bobbinet loom, and then hand finished with metallic couching and net insertion, although I’m not positive of the exact technique used - it might have been made on a jacquard loom.   The fringe is hand knotted and hand applied.  No matter how it was made, the result is quite stunning.  The base material is most likely silk on a fine netting - note the fine gauze-like appearance of the yarn.

Age:  Most likely 1920s, possibly 1930s.

Sizing: This art deco shawl is triangular shaped and measures 72” across the unfringed top.  The fringed sides measure 50” in length and the centre of the shawl measures 28” in height, 42” total height if you include the 14” long fringe.

Condition: You’ll note in the photos that the silk yarn has moved / separated in places, but this is rather normal given the way that this is woven and given the fineness of the yarn (see second and third to last close-up photos) - this creates a few small areas that appear worn.  There is one area near the unfringed edge where there are two brownish spots (see last close-up photo).  Finally, due to the delicate nature of this art deco shawl, I haven’t laundered it and there may be some toning to it

This is a lovely art deco shawl - beautiful quality and an authentic deco era piece, so despite the small problems, a lovely art deco shawl, sold “as is”!
