This is a vintage 60s mens overcoat made under the Crombie Sabelere brand name by Freedman of Montreal Canada. Freedman was founded in 1906 by Lyon Cohen and went on to become one of Montreal’s largest clothing manufacturers - Friedman was the maiden name of his wife. As an aside, Lyon Cohen’s grandson was poet Leonard Cohen, who briefly worked at the company during the 1950s. The overcoat is made of fine quality wool in a charcoal grey colour. It has high set notched lapels and does up with three buttons at the front. There is a flapped pocket at either side and the sleeves have a buttoned tab at each cuff. It has a 15” kick vent at the back and the overcoat is half lined in a black satin acetate fabric.
Label: Crombie Sabelere Loomed in Scotland Tailored Exclusively by Freedman. Sabelere was a registered brand name of JJ Crombie of Aberdeen, Scotland.
Union label: ACWA - Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America that was in use from 1962 until 1976
Retailer label: Norman’s Limitee Vetements Pour Hommes 91 Ste-Catherine, Est Montreal
Sizing: No size is indicated, but this overcoat should fit a size 42/44 with narrow shoulders - please rely on the following measurements for fit, either comparing them to another coat that you may own or your body measurements, allowing at least 1” less for fit (4” at the chest) or more should you wish to wear a suit jacket underneath:
Shoulders: 18” across seam-to-seam
Sleeves: 25” long from the shoulder seam
Sleeve Inseam: 15 1/2” long
Chest: 50” around, taken under the arms
Waist: 51” around
Overall length: 40"
Condition: This overcoat is in excellent condition, very clean with a beautiful nappe (finish) - this really looks like it saw very little, if any, use and was well stored over the years.
This is a quality Scottish wool overcoat - excellent overcoat in great shape!
