This is a late Edwardian mens winter coat - it dates from circa 1910 to the early 1920s.  This Edwardian mens winter coat is made in a heavyweight brown melton cloth wool - melton cloth is a tightly woven, highly finished wool that provides both warmth and protection against the elements.  The coat has a fur (I believe muskrat) covered shawl collar and is double breasted with a 2x3 button configuration, either of the top buttons hidden under the lapels depending on whether you fasten the buttons to the right or left.  This Edwardian mens winter coat can be done up either to the left or to the right as there are loops on either side.  The coat has a flapped pocket at either side and an 17” kick pleat at the back.  The coat is lined in a black twill fabric that is backed with wool for extra warmth.  There is no maker’s label in this Edwardian mens winter coat.

Sizing: This Edwardian mens winter coat would fit a size medium (US size 38/40 regular), depending on if you wear a jacket underneath it - please rely on the following measurements for fit, taking the thickness of the fabric into account:

Shoulders:  17 1/2” across, from shoulder/sleeve seam to shoulder/sleeve seam

Sleeves:  25” from the shoulder/sleeve seam

Sleeve Inseam:  16 3/4”

Chest: 46” around

Waist: 47” around

Hips:  49” around

Length: 44”, taken at the back from the neck seam

Condition:  Considering its age, this Edwardian mens winter coat is in very good condition with no pronounced wear, tear or stains, but there is a patch repair at the lower left front, near the opening (see last close-up photo).  If one closes the coat to left rather than the right, the patch is hidden.  In addition, there is wear to the lining at the armpits.  Finally, there may be some light highlights to the wool and odour, but a dry cleaning of this Edwardian mens winter coat would probably take care of this.  With a repair to the lining at the armpits, this will be a very nice coat.

Despite the patch repair, which is a part of the history of the coat, this is a rare example of late Edwardian mens winter coat - fabulous quality, with a bit of care, this will last for many years to come….
