This is a wonderful 1950s vintage smoking jacket made by H.V. Cowie of Toronto under their “Bonnington” brand name. This vintage smoking jacket is made in a very attractive ornate paisley style patterned acetate. It has a shawl collar and has a jetted pocket at either side as well as a pocket at the left chest. The shoulders are slightly padded and the sleeves have turned cuffs. The shawl collar and cuffs are edged with red satin cording. It closes at the waist with a matching sash belt. This vintage smoking jacket is fully lined in red twill wool or wool blended fabric.
Age: 1950s, maybe early 1960s
Label: Bonnington Reg’d Tailored by H.V. Cowie Co Ltd at the neck only. Cowie was founded in 1922 by Hedley Vicars Cowie and specialized in manufacturing and importing menswear. Bonnington was registered as a brand in 1945. The company declined after H.V. Cowie’s death in 1965 and the plant was sold in 1967, although they continued activity as an importer until dissolution in 2008.
Sizing: Size M (medium) is indicated on the label of this vintage smoking jacket, but please rely on the following measurements for fit:
Shoulders: 17 1/2” across seam-to-seam
Sleeves: 25 1/2” from the shoulder seam
Sleeve Inseam: 18 3/4”
Chest: 48”, taken under the arms
Waist: 44” around, meant to be cinched with the belt
Overall length: 34“, measured flat
Condition: This vintage smoking jacket looks to have seen very little use and was well kept over the last 65 or more years - this presents itself very well with no wear, tear, soiling, staining or odour except for some soiling/yellowing to the label.
This is a very rich looking vintage smoking jacket - beautiful quality as is the norm with Bonnington garments!
